Is security a problem if I use a public workstation?

Yes. Web browsers cache information and create a history file on the local workstation. This allows a subsequent user of the workstation to access the system under your name using the browser's Back button to recall a page from the cache, or by finding a page with your personal information in the browser's history file. If you are concerned about the security of your interlibrary loan requests, you can take the following steps:

1.        Access the ILL Express! system only from your personal computer or an otherwise secure workstation.

2.        When using a public access workstation:

o        Delete from the history file of your Web browser those pages that you do not want anyone else viewing.  OR

o        Exit from the Web browser before you leave the workstation. This prevents the Back button from accessing the pages you were working with.

Why is my account blocked?

Your account may be blocked because you have overdue interlibrary loan material.  Please read the Borrowing Conditions and Return of Materials section in the ILL Policies and Procedures section.

If you have any questions about account access, please visit the Interlibrary Loan Department on Level 5 of Thomas Cooper Library, or contact us at uscill@mailbox.sc.edu or (803) 777-2805.

Explanation of Statuses

ILL Express! uses various statuses to track interlibrary loan requests. These statuses, listed below, may be used to pinpoint the exact location of any given item at any given time. Please note that these statuses reflect the actions of the requesting customer as well as those of the ILL staff.

Awaiting Copyright Clearance
The article request has been submitted by the customer and it is awaiting copyright processing to determine if any copyright fees need to be paid. These fees, if required, are paid by the library, not by the requesting customer.

Awaiting Copyright Permission
The article request has been submitted by the customer and has gone through the Copyright Clearance process.  Copyright fees cannot be paid in the usual manner and we are determing if the request can be acquired from a commercial document delivery provider.

Awaiting ALA Processing
The request has been submitted by the customer.  It cannot be processed via OCLC, the worldwide electronic database through which we place most of our requests. It will now be processed as an ALA (American Library Association) request (a paper request as opposed to an electronic request) and sent via fax or mail to a potential lender.

Awaiting Customer Contact
The requested item has arrived and has been processed by the ILL staff, but we have not yet contacted the customer to inform him/her that it has arrived.

Awaiting Doc Provider Processing
The article request has been submitted by the customer.  It has been determined in the copyright clearance process that copyright fees must be paid and the only method available to do so is through a commercial document provider. The item will be requested from a document provider. The copyright fees are paid by the library, not by the requesting customer.

Awaiting Extensive Searching
The request has been been submitted by the customer.   Preliminary searching was unsuccessful.  The ILL librarians will now do extensive searching to determine if a lender can be found.

Awaiting Faculty Express Processing
The request has been submitted by a faculty member as a Faculty Express order and is awaiting processing by one of the ILL Librarians.

Awaiting Other Request Processing
The request has been submitted by the customer and has gone through the copyright clearance process, if necessary. The customer has provided a call number (as opposed to an Awaiting Request Process order).  The request is now ready to be searched and requested from potential lenders.

Awaiting Overdue Resolution
The item is overdue according to our records, however the customer has informed us that the item was returned to Thomas Cooper Library.  The ILL Staff is searching for the item and determining how to resolve the problem.

Awaiting Post Receipt Processing
The requested item has arrived, but has not yet been fully processed by the ILL staff.

Awaiting Request Processing
The request has been submitted by the customer and has gone through the copyright clearance process, if necessary. It is now ready to be searched by ILL staff and requested from potential lenders.

Awaiting Return Label Processing
The item has been returned to the ILL office by the customer and return processing has been started by the ILL staff.  It is currently awaiting a return label so that it can be returned to the lender.

Awaiting Stacks Search
The request has been submitted by the customer. The ILL staff has determined that the item is owned by Thomas Cooper Library and is verifying that it is available for the customer.

Cancelled By Customer
The customer has cancelled this request and no longer requires the requested item.

Cancelled By ILL Staff
The request has been cancelled by the ILL staff.  An e-mail has been sent to the customer giving the reason for the cancellation.

Checked Out to Customer
The item has arrived, has been processed by the ILL staff, and has been checked out by the customer or by one of his/her proxies. The customer is responsible for the item until it has been returned to the ILL Department.

Customer Notified via E-Mail
The item has arrived, has been processed by the ILL staff, and the customer has been notified of its availability via E-Mail. This status reflects the customer's preferred notification method (E-Mail) as entered in his/her personal information page.

Customer Notified via Mail
The item has arrived, has been processed by the ILL staff, and the customer has been notified of its availability via mail. This status reflects the customer's preferred notification method (Mail) as entered in his/her personal information page.

Customer Removed from System
This customer has been deleted from the ILL Express! system. Reasons for this may include ineligible status, duplicate customer records, or disciplinary action for abuse of ILL.

Delivered to Web
The item has arrived, has been processed by the ILL staff, and has been posted to the requesting customer's personal ILL Express! page, where it may be viewed and/or downloaded electronically via Adobe Acrobat.

In Print Queue
The item has arrived and has been partially processed by the ILL staff. It is currently awaiting the printing of its ILL identification label.

In Return Address Print Queue
The item is in the ILL office and the return process has been started by the ILL staff.  It has been checked in and is awaiting the printing of its return address label.

In Transit
The item is in the ILL office waiting to be returned to the lender.

Incorrect Item Received and Returned
An item was received that does not match the item that was requested. It has been returned to the lender and the original item is being re-requested.

Item Checked In
The item has been returned to the ILL office (not to the lender) by the customer and the item has been checked in. It is now ready for return processing.

Item Returned
The item has been returned to the lender.

Received Incorrect/Partial Item
The item was received but does not match the item that was requested or the order is incomplete. The ILL staff will determine the quickest means to correct this.

Request Finished
The entire request process has been completed successfully.  Requests with this status are archived under the "View Request History" button.

Note: Cancelled requests are not at "Request Finished" status and thus do not display under "View Request History".  Cancelled requests may be found under the "View/Resubmit Cancelled Requests" button.

Request Held Until...
The request is being held for later processing. This status is used mostly in December when Interlibrary Loan services cease over the holidays. Requests are held until they can be processed in January of the following year. This status may also be used to hold difficult requests until we receive more information.

Request In Processing
The request is being processed at this moment.

Request Sent
The request has been sent to several owning libraries and ILL is waiting for a response.

Submitted by Customer
The request has been submitted by the customer and is awaiting processing by the ILL staff.

  • When an item arrives in the Interlibrary Loan Department and is processed by the staff, a notification will be sent to you via the e-mail address specified in your User Information. Please always remember to keep your e-mail address current.
  • Due to the nature of certain e-mail filtering software, notifications from our address, uscill@mailbox.sc.edu, may be sent to some programs' trash or junk mail folders. Please check to make sure that our address is not blocked by your software or e-mail service to ensure you will receive all of your notifications.
